Job Introduction

We’re seeking a talented and motivated Project Engineer to join our Automation and Engineering Team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in delivering Capital & Functional projects that are shaping the future of automation in retail and grocery logistics.

Following the successful launch of our state-of-the-art automated facility in Omega Business Park, we’re now preparing for the development of another cutting-edge distribution centre. At Home Bargains, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of automation and innovation, and we’re looking for people who share our drive to push boundaries and deliver exceptional engineering solutions.

Based within our engineering function, you will play a key role in designing, delivering, and optimising automation systems across our distribution centres and wider operations. From advanced ASRS and conveyor systems to robotics, AMRs, Facilities and energy-efficient infrastructure, your projects will enhance performance, safety, and sustainability.

You’ll lead projects through the full lifecycle—from concept and design through to commissioning and continuous improvement—working cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and managing suppliers to deliver high-quality results on time and within budget.

Job Overview

  • Project Delivery: Lead end-to-end delivery of automation and engineering projects, managing scope, schedule, budget, and risks to meet defined objectives.
  • Technical Leadership: Specify mechanical, electrical, and software requirements during design phases, supervise commissioning, lead FAT/SAT, and ensure integration with WMS/WCS systems.
  • Innovation & Engineering: Stay at the forefront of automation and robotics trends, piloting new technologies to improve safety, service, and operational efficiency.
  • Stakeholder & Supplier Management: Build strong cross-functional relationships and manage suppliers to ensure alignment with contracts, KPIs, and delivery standards.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all project designs and implementations comply with relevant legislation, including CDM 2015, PUWER, LOLER, and food safety standards.
  • Sustainability & Continuous Improvement: Integrate energy efficiency and sustainable practices into project design and execution, while capturing lessons learned for future improvements.
  • Data & Reporting: Produce business cases, capital requests, project reporting, and performance analysis to inform decision-making and investment planning.
  • Mentorship & Collaboration: Support the development of engineers and the wider teams, contributing to a culture of continuous learning and best practice sharing.

Minimum Criteria To Apply

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Industrial Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Project management certification (e.g. APM, PRINCE2, PMP)
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience delivering CAPEX & functional projects in retail, grocery, intralogistics, or FMCG environments.
  • Hands-on experience with automation systems such as ASRS, AGVs, conveyors, robotics, and sortation.
  • Experience with project tenders, contract negotiations, and contract management.
  • Skilled in project software (MS Project, AutoCAD/SolidWorks) with strong data analysis and commercial skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management, communication, and presentation skills.
  • IOSH/NEBOSH and CDM awareness beneficial.
  • Full UK driving licence required.
